If you're looking for restaurants near the Manchester Hyatt in San Diego, whether you're in town for a conference, a trade show or a few days by the bay, you don't need a car or a long cab ride for a good dinner. The hotel is on the downtown waterfront, and the Marina District and the Gaslamp Quarter are just inland.
This guide covers what's within walking distance of the Manchester Grand Hyatt and how to fit dinner around a packed session schedule. It explains how to plan different nights, from dinner for one at the bar to a client dinner or a team night out. It also shows how Salvatore's Cucina & Lounge, a California-Mediterranean Italian restaurant 7 minutes' walk away in downtown San Diego, fits each of them.
Where is the Manchester Grand Hyatt, and what's within walking distance?
The Manchester Grand Hyatt is at 1 Market Place, right on the water. Hyatt's own fact sheet describes it as situated on San Diego Bay, between the San Diego Convention Center and Seaport Village. The San Diego Tourism Authority lists it as about 0.3 miles from the Convention Center.
In practice, your dinner options sit in three directions:
- Along the water: Seaport Village, the Port of San Diego's 14-acre waterfront complex, is right next door. It has 54 shops, 13 casual eateries and 4 waterfront restaurants. The Embarcadero promenade continues north toward the USS Midway.
- Inland, in the Marina District: This is the quieter residential neighbourhood between the bay and the Gaslamp. It's where Salvatore's is, a 7-minute walk away.
- Further inland, in the Gaslamp Quarter: Downtown's busiest dining and nightlife blocks start about 5 minutes past Salvatore's.
The hotel also has its own restaurants and bars. These are convenient, but if you've been inside a ballroom since 8 AM, a short walk out of the building is often the best part of the evening.

How far is Salvatore's from the Manchester Grand Hyatt?
Salvatore's is 0.4 miles from the Manchester Grand Hyatt, about a 7-minute walk. From the hotel, walk inland on Market Street, away from the bay, to Front Street, then turn left and walk north to 750 Front St. Salvatore's is at 750 Front St.
The walk is flat, on city sidewalks, and lit in the evening. It's short enough to make in work clothes and dress shoes. You can also go back to your room between the last session and dinner without rushing.
Distances from Salvatore's to other places you might visit during your stay:
- San Diego Convention Center: 0.4 mi, about 7 minutes
- Marriott Marquis San Diego Marina: 0.3 mi, about 5 minutes
- Gaslamp Quarter: 0.3 mi, about 5 minutes
- Petco Park: 0.6 mi, about 11 minutes
- USS Midway Museum: 0.7 mi, about 13 minutes
How do you fit dinner around a conference schedule?
Plan dinner around the end of sessions, not the start of the evening. Most conference days wind down between 5 and 6 PM, so everyone heads out at the same time. Booking a table for 6:30 or 7 PM gives you time to drop off your bag, change and walk over without rushing.
A few timing points matter near this hotel:
- Big-event weeks fill up fast. The Manchester Grand Hyatt alone has 1,628 guest rooms, according to Hyatt. The Convention Center next door has 615,701 sq ft of exhibit space, according to the San Diego Convention Center. When a large show is in town, thousands of attendees look for dinner within a few blocks at the same time. Book client and team dinners when you register, not on the day. Our Convention Center events guide lists the big dates.
- Happy hour fills the gap. If your last session ends at 5 PM and the group dinner is at 8, a drink at the bar in between beats waiting in the lobby. Salvatore's happy hour runs Monday to Friday, 5 to 7 PM.
- Lunch on weekdays is a hotel or Seaport Village meal. Salvatore's opens at 5 PM Monday to Friday, and from noon on Saturday and Sunday. For a quick weekday lunch between sessions, stay close to the hotel or Seaport Village.
- Game nights add to the crowds. On Padres home game days, the area around Petco Park and the Gaslamp gets busier still. Our restaurants near Petco Park guide covers game-day timing.
Where should you eat on your own near the Hyatt?
For dinner on your own, sit at the bar. You don't need a reservation, the pace is relaxed, and nobody minds you checking email between courses.
At Salvatore's, walk-ins are welcome at the full bar, and the lounge sits behind the dining room. A solo dinner here could be a starter like the meatballs ($16) or fried gnocchi ($16), a bowl of handmade pasta such as the spicy vodka rigatoni ($29) or short rib ragú ($30), and a glass of wine. The kitchen rolls its pasta fresh every day. If you're there before 7 PM on a weekday, the happy hour menu brings house wine down to $8 and cocktails to $10.

Where should you take a client to dinner near the Hyatt?
For a client dinner, choose a reservation, a room where you can hear each other, and a walk short enough that no one needs a car. That rules out the loudest blocks of the Gaslamp on a convention night.
Salvatore's front dining room is candlelit, with white tablecloths. The menu is broad enough for a mixed table, from lobster ravioli ($36) and pan-seared salmon ($38) to steak frites ($47) and braised short rib ($34). The wine list focuses on family vintners from Tuscany, Sicily and the Central Coast, and there are 11 signature cocktails plus two zero-proof options for guests who aren't drinking. The full menu is online, so you can check dietary needs before you book.
Two practical tips for client dinners:
- Book for the right number of people. Six people often turns into eight once colleagues hear about the dinner, and tables of eight or more are harder to add at short notice during a big show.
- Plan where to go afterwards. If the conversation is going well, you can move from the dining room to the lounge without leaving the building.
For more on dining near the venue, see Salvatore's page on its Italian restaurant near the San Diego Convention Center.
Where can a team or group eat near the Manchester Grand Hyatt?
For a team dinner, book a private or semi-private space early and let the restaurant plan the menu. A group of 20 is hard to seat at short notice in any downtown dining room during a convention week.
Salvatore's group options:
- Private dining room: Seats 65, or 90 for a standing reception.
- Full buyout: Up to 175 guests, for a company dinner or a closing-night reception.
- Events team: Handles any party over 15, including custom menus. Send enquiries through the private events page or to info@salvatoressandiego.com.
The events team plans corporate dinners, cocktail receptions and holiday parties. If your conference falls in November or December, see our holiday party venues guide. Year-end dates are often the first to book up.
Where can you go late after the closing reception?
On Fridays and Saturdays, the lounge at Salvatore's becomes the Medusa Room and stays open until 2 AM. It has low pendant lights, leopard banquettes, a backlit marble bar and a neon sign. It's still a 7-minute walk back to the Hyatt at the end of the night. On Monday to Thursday, Salvatore's closes at 11 PM, and on Sunday at 10 PM. See the late night page for details.
What if you're staying through the weekend?
If your trip runs past the closing session, the weekend opens up more options close to the hotel.
- Weekend brunch: Saturday and Sunday, 12 to 4 PM, with bottomless mimosas. Dishes include croissant benedict ($20), chilaquiles ($17) and steak and eggs ($28). See the brunch menu.
- Saturday evenings: A harpist plays at Salvatore's on a harp that once belonged to Harpo Marx.
- Walks to plan around: The USS Midway Museum and the Embarcadero are both close by, and Seaport Village is next door to the hotel. Our Marina District guide covers the neighbourhood in more detail.
If colleagues are driving in to meet you, Salvatore's has underground parking with validation. The entrance is on Union Street, one block in from Front St. Directions are on the contact page.
